The first Mermaid volume sounds as gorgeous as it did upon its initial release in 1998. Bragg and Tweedy trade off powerful vocals, while the rest of Wilcos musical input is just as important to the projects outcome. The Wilco material translates as more summery and shimmering (this was the -era) than Braggs folk-rock take on most of the material, but just about every interpretation of Guthries lyrics reign supreme.
California Stars has become a live staple at Wilco shows; its easy sing-along breathed to life courtesy of the steady beat held by ex-Wilcoer, Ken Coomer. Bragg leads the way on the politically/romantically charged She Came Along to Me, and plays plaintive guitar as Natalie Merchant takes the vocals to Birds and Ships (their duet, Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key is another album highlight).
Bragg and Tweedys vocals dont cross paths often, but when they converge on the down-tempo album closer, The Unwelcome Guest, the marriage is worth the wait. II falls short of its predecessor, but is not without merit. With prose based around faith, love, and, yes, politics, Guthries lyricism shines through any tension that may have been mounting between Bragg and the Wilco camp. Its impossible to frown upon Airline to Heaven, which like California Stars gets massive replay at Wilco concerts.
Wilco takes the Summerteeth approach with Secret of the Sea; throwing everything but the kitchen sink, musically, atop the words but somehow comes out completely clean. The late Jay Bennetts fingerprints are blessedly all over the track, but leaves things be with the epic, acoustic-driven Remember the Mountain Bed. Braggs best contribution to this volume is the sing-along My Flying Saucer with its lightning-fast guitar strums. But the Englishmans material pales in comparison to his stateside brothers this go round, although his colaboration with Merchant for I Was Born is lovely. Which brings us to Vol. Culled from the turn of the century sessions, a few tracks of the Bragg and Wilco tracks have production values that scream demo, and certain songs fade away rather than cut off, leaving one to gander a guess at how many of the songs are fully realized.
Regardless, there are gems here, and the fact that someone elses ghost looms large makes it a must-buy. Im sure theyll be some Wilco re-issues in a few years with unreleased material, but until that day exists we have some more contributions courtesy of Bennett. His piano and guitar play enhances the lilting That Lonesome Wind That Blows, and his organ lifts When the Roses Bloom Again. As for Bragg, he provides much of the material here, with the haunting, banjo-infused Man in the Sand and picked-up finale Out to Get leading the way.
His weary vocals highlight the stripped-down lament of Jail Cell Blues, and Satisfied Blues acts as a musical reinvention of his own The Man in the Iron Mask. Braggs new take of his old classic can be heard as an involuntary tribute: much of Guthrie is within him. With Mermaid Avenue: The Complete Sessions, hes within us, too. Essential Tracks: She Came Along to Me, Remember the Mountain Bed, and Out to Get.

Steven I re-posted the question (actually two - one about Wilco vs. Bragg and one about whether the d/l's are working. Marky You do awe-inspiring work Marky and you get, by my estimation, an incredible response. It was actually seeing that your Brick By Brick demos post (another cool idea) got six comments and these Bragg demos (reasonably comparable items) got zilch that got me riled up. (Blog envy is kinda lame but there you go) P.S. Love the idea of a 'you can't see the link till you leave a comment' idea!
MRML is a blog about the devestating effects of culture: music, politics, comics plus etc. Blah blah blah. At times MRML will post fine, unpurchasable three-chord obscurica (punk, pop-punk, new wave, mod, power-pop, gospel, reggae, hardcore, rockabilly, folk, country.whatever.) -'The otherwise unavailable files in this blog are posted for a limited time and are intended for educational, non-commercial use.

There has always been a lot more to Mr Bragg than his general image as a socialist protest singer. To me, he is simply a great songwriter who has produced brilliant songs for the last 30odd years. Many of his best are just great love songs with brilliant and often emotionally raw lyrics, or some that are just very funny. I don't think all his protest songs work, but when they do they are brilliant - such as the barnstorming live version of To Have and to Have Not in the playlist below, and the more recent We're Following the Wrong Star. To me these songs are just as, or more relevant now, then when they were first released.
Then there is the likes of Must I Paint you a Picture which one of the greatest fans of Dame Shirley Bassey declared, on first listen, that it could be one for the Dame. Below the playlist there are links to a number of other playlists charting what I think are the essential Billy Bragg, along with a best of the Mermaid Avenue albums he did with Wilco, for which they wrote the music to go with lyrics left by the great Woody Guthrie. For non-subscribers, much of the material can be purchased for very little cost by downloading the Vol 1&2 box sets along with the complete Mermaid Avenue sessions.
For subscribers to other streaming services check out His music is also far more diverse than what I would think is the general perception. Many might well have been surprised he got involved with Wilco for Mermaid Avenue, but fans should not have been so surprised as they would have known about the likes of Wishing the Days Away from back in 86, and his work with Peter Buck and Michael Stripe of REM on the Johnny Marr produced Don't Try this at Home from 1991.
Don't Try this at Home in it's extended form is my favourite, and his most diverse with likes of Cindy of a Thousand Lives sounding like Wilco circa 1999 at their most adventurous. Tooth & Nail, his album from this year is one of his most consistent, with track like Do Onto Others and Tommorrow's Going to be be a Better day are up there with his very best.
Moon advert: Check out As it is as powerful and lyrically great as Mr Bragg at his protesting best.
